What Are Nightly Notes?
- They're the opposite of Morning Pages.
- So they're written at night instead of first thing in the morning.
- They are typed instead of handwritten,
- They're public instead of private,
- They're guided by questions instead of flowing freely
- A completed entry consists of six questions and six answers instead of three pages
- Since they are public others are allowed to comment on them
For an interesting variation on daily writing see 100 words.
"To be really great in little things, to be truly noble and heroic in
the insipid details of everyday life, is a virtue so rare as to be worthy
of canonization."
Harriet Beecher Stowe as quoted by Angeles Arrien
in Signs of Life page 63

Tonight's Questions and Answers
Saturday, October 05, 2002
It is 8:46 am. Not officially a "Nightly Note" but a note about something that might motivate a revivial of Nightly Notes. While writing
Morning Pages I decided to hunt for a passage that I only partly remember and for which I don't know the source. My first thought was to look in Life's Compnion; Journal Writing as a Spiitual Quest by Christina Baldwin. I haven't read from it in ages but I keep it near my bed. Anyway, Chapter 3 is titled, "The Art of Questioning" and it has some thoughts, insights and questions that I'd like to explore.
page 36: Assumptions Grid
In the journal, finish the following sentences:
- I used to assume . . . people said what they meant.
- I still assume . . . most people try to say what they think they mean.
- I used to believe . . . people in positions of authority deserved to be there.
- I still believe . . . most people are better than they believe themselves to be.
- I want to believe . . . that we are here for a purpose.
*Post your sentence completions to the message board or e-mail them to me and with your permission I'll post them somewhere.
